Drill and Practice Tutorial

If you’d like to see if your child is actually learning from the programs he or she watches on TV, making a simple Drill and Practice exercise can definitely help!

A Drill and Practice exercise is a quiz type activity that will give immediate results after each question. Here’s a sample.

Notice that if the child answers incorrectly, he or she will have the option to try again before moving on to the next question!

Here’s how to make a basic one.

        1.     Open a Word document or something equivalent to it, like Notepad. List down the questions you would want to include in your Drill and Practice as well as two choices: one wrong and one correct answer.

       2.      Open a blank PowerPoint document. Copy and paste the questions and the choices onto the slide; remember, one question per slide.

       3.      After the Question slide, which will be labeled Q, add two more blank slides, labeled C and W respectively, which corresponds to Correct and Wrong.

       4.      Go back to Q1, and select/highlight the correct answer. Right click and select “Hyperlink”. Select the “Document” tab and click “Locate” under “Anchor.” Select “ Click “Slide Titles” and select “C1.” Do the same for the wrong answer, and direct the Hyperlink to W1.

       5.      As you add more slides, Q will become Q2, Q3, and so on, while C will become C2, to make it easier for you to select which slide to link the answers to. Remember that these labels only serve as a guide as you add hyperlinks to the choices. They may be removed or replaced once you start customizing your Drill and Practice.

Customizing Slides

       1.      To insert pictures.
            a.       In the uppermost tabs, select “Insert” and click on “Photo” and click either “Photo Browser” to go to the gallery or “Picture from File” if you have pictures saved on to your computer.

       2.      To customize backgrounds.
           a.       For themes made available by Microsoft, select “Themes”
           b.      To make your own background, select “Themes” and click on “Background” on the right side of the screen; select the Format Background” option.

       3.      To change fonts.
           a.       Highlight the word you whose font you want to change. Go to the “Home” tab and select “Fonts”.

Taking the Quiz.

       1.      Simply press the F5 key or “View Slideshow” option
       2.      The child may take it alone, or you may take it together to discuss why an answer is correct or incorrect (if it is not stated in the C or W slides).
